With the January transfer window now open, here is a look at what your club could do over the coming weeks...

Aberdeen

Jimmy Thelin's Aberdeen were flying in the first few months of the season, but have had just as dramatic a collapse since the end of November. That said, they go into 2025 just two points off Rangers and sitting where they perhaps would've wanted to be at the start of the campaign.

The Dons will be looking to add to their central defensive and midfield options, as well as a winger/forward in the January transfer window, as they chase second place and the lucrative prize of a Champions League qualifying spot.

Newly-promoted head of recruitment Nuno de Almeida will have a list of targets at the ready and the Pittodrie club could return to the Scandinavian market - one Thelin knows well.

Latvia captain Kristers Tobers, 24, is among those linked with a move. The Grasshoppers player can play at both centre-back and defensive midfield and is out of contract in the summer - although the Swiss club have the option to extend that deal by another year.

The start of January means Jack MacKenzie, Angus MacDonald, Jamie McGrath, Duk and Ante Palaversa are all in the final months of their contract - and are all free to talk to other clubs - although the Dons can trigger a two-year extension with the latter.

Celtic

You'd think being 14 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and sitting nicely in the Champions League table, Celtic would not need to strengthen their squad too much. However, they will be trying.

With James Forrest injured going into the New Year and reported interest from the MLS and Europe for Luis Palma, a winger could be on the shopping list.

At left-back, could Celtic make a move for fan favourite Kieran Tierney? The Scotland international can now talk to clubs outside of England, with Sky Sports News confirming Rodgers is keen on the Arsenal player returning to Glasgow. With Greg Taylor out of contract in the summer, Barcelona's Alex Valle only on loan until the end of the season and Alexandro Bernabei wanted in Brazil - it could also be an area to strengthen.

While the Hoops will be linked with plenty of names - including no doubt long-term target Mathias Kvistgaarden - they may choose to wait until the summer when it comes to improving other areas.

However, some players could depart including defender Stephen Welsh who is wanted by KV Mechelen. Sky in Germany have also reported several Premier League clubs have made enquiries about in-form winger Nicolas Kuhn, while Kyogo and Cameron Carter-Vickers have also recently attracted interest from abroad.

Dundee

Following their top-six finish last season, Tony Docherty's side are in the mix to do the same again this time around.

The Dee are normally proactive when it comes to adding to their squad - if they can. This January promises to deliver more of the same with Mexican midfielder Cesar Garza already signed up to join on a year-long loan from leading Liga MX side CF Monterrey - a club Dundee have a strategic partnership with. Winger Oluwaseun Adewumi will also extend his loan from Burnley - another club Dundee have a link-up with.

Captain Joe Shaughnessy is recovering well from an ACL injury suffered last season and will return in the new year. While the defender will feel like a new signing - Docherty may look to strengthen further that area.

At the other end of the pitch, Simon Murray, Bristol City loanee Seb Palmer-Houlden and Curtis Main have chipped in with goals - but could Dundee move for another striker?

However, their best bit of business could be keeping Lyall Cameron at the club. The midfielder, 22, is out of contract in the summer and with seven goals in all competitions and as many assists - he is not short of suitors.

Dundee United

Image: Jim Goodwin's Dundee United ended 2024 in fourth spot

Jim Goodwin's side were only promoted in the summer and already have their eyes on a top-six finish - at least. The Tannadice Park club ended 2024 three points off third spot and boss Jim Goodwin is keen to strengthen his squad - insisting he has the smallest pool of players to pick from.

Just 10 players made 10 or more league starts in the first half of the season and when injuries to the likes of skipper Ross Docherty, Craig Sibbald, Ross Graham and Louis Moult hit earlier in the campaign - he was left with a depleted squad, meaning 17-year-old Owen Stirton was among those to get thrown in at the deep end.

Goodwin brought in 10 players en route to the Championship title and 13 new faces in the summer. He will look to add pace to his attack and depth to his defensive options, but perhaps his key bit of business will be keeping Sam Dalby.

Sam Dalby's 90th-minute penalty earned a point for Dundee United

The Wrexham loanee has scored nine goals, making him the top goal scorer in the Premiership. However, that form has caught the eye of his parent club who could recall the forward. United hold hopes of keeping him beyond this season - once his deal at Wrexham ends - but perhaps keeping him until the summer will be more significant if they're to have as successful a second half of the season.

Heart of Midlothian

Image: Hearts boss Neil Critchley will look to bolster his squad and move clear of the relegation zone

This will be an interesting window on a number of fronts for Hearts. It is the first under head coach Neil Critchley. Added to that, the new arrangement between Brighton owner Tony Bloom's analytics company will have a say in who comes in.

Hearts' position in the table means they will have to recruit much better to move up the Scottish Premiership and they have to address the defence. Injuries, poor form and a lack of physicality are hampering the Tynecastle Park club who are conceding too many soft goals.

The goals have dried up for captain Lawrence Shankland this season after a prolific previous two campaigns. The striker is out of contract this summer and it looks unlikely he will remain at the club beyond the season. Critchley will need to find a frontman who can take on the burden in this window.

Hearts also find themselves with too many in the squad not contributing. Getting players out is sometimes just as hard as bringing new players in.

Hibernian

Bill Foley criticised the appointment of head coach David Gray and sporting director Malky Mackay

After a positive December, head coach David Gray and sporting director Malky Mackay may be rethinking their approach in the January window.

New head of recruitment Garvan Stewart will also play a role in the process following his recent arrival from Bournemouth where owners, the Black Knights, also have a stake in Hibernian.

The goalkeeping position is one that will be looked at. After some high-profile blunders, loanee Josef Bursik has dropped to the bench for Jordan Smith. Smith also arrived in the summer to provide competition for the gloves, but Hibernian may feel the need to add more quality especially if they cut Bursik loan short.

Hibs' bloated squad is something they will try to address as they look to rid themselves of players offering little, especially with 15 out-of-contract this summer.

Injury to forward Kieron Bowie, who joined late in the summer window, might see recruitment staff looking for another striker to help Martin Boyle and Elie Youan, while loanee Mykola Kuharevich has been inconsistent.

Kilmarnock

Derek McInnes has already confirmed he is ready to dip into the market in January after a tough start to the season.

However, he has admitted the club won't be buying players - so loan deals and snapping up free agents looks like the only route.

Daniel Armstrong will leave Kilmarnock in the summer for free - so will the club cash in during January instead?

With defender Stuart Findlay out for several months and suspensions taking their toll - defensive reinforcements will be top of his wish list.

However, with Daniel Armstrong set to leave for free in the summer, could Killie cash in on him in January? If he is sold then Killie would look to replace him and add to their options further forward.

Motherwell

The big decision for Motherwell will centre around midfielder Lennon Miller. The 18-year-old continues to impress but is out of contract at the end of next season.

Stuart Kettlewell will be desperate to keep hold of the youngster who has made over 60 first-team appearances - but what will happen if an offer is placed on the table?

Elsewhere, some would think Motherwell need reinforcements following a number of long-term injuries. However, many of those players are back, with captain Paul McGinn, Jack Vale and Callum Slattery closing in on a return too.

Kettlewell's squad have shown they can mix it with the best and get results - and with key players fit again, he will be confident heading into the second half of the season.

Rangers

Philippe Clement has consistently been at pains to stress just how big a rebuild Rangers are going through - and it is nowhere near finished yet.

A turbulent summer window saw 11 incomings and 16 outgoings. While January won't be quite as busy, Clement and technical director Nils Koppen will be working to find young, hungry and, ultimately, sellable assets that can help Rangers bridge the gap to Celtic - all while continuing to trim the player wage bill.

Rangers' need for defensive re-enforcements was present before a season-ending injury for Feyenoord loanee Neraysho Kasanwirjo was exacerbated by the loss of John Souttar for "several weeks". Clement has confirmed those losses add to the need for another centre-back who is able to make an immediate impact.

The rejuvenation of Nico Raskin diminishes the need for Clement to go back into the market to look for the No 6 he missed out on over the summer but Rangers still need midfield options with Dundee's Lyall Cameron continuing to be linked. Signing the versatile 22-year-old would ally with Koppen's mission to bring the best young Scottish players to the club - and he is out of contract in the summer. Any move for a midfielder could cast doubt on the futures of the likes of Kieran Dowell and Tom Lawrence.

Cyriel Dessers started the season as Rangers' only available striker but now finds himself at times third pick behind the returning Danilo and in-form Hamza Igamane - and Rangers look like a more dynamic and clinical side without him in it. It may be that a move in January suits all parties - despite potentially leaving Rangers short in remaining Europa League group stage games - and would allow Clement to potentially bring in another option up front, either on loan or with an eye on another development player like Igamane.

Ross County

Don Cowie is desperate to avoid another relegation play-off scrap this season and has already been made to add to his squad.

Following Ross Laidlaw's injury, the club signed former Borussia Dortmund academy player Jordan Amissah as cover in the goalkeeping department.

So what will this January hold for the Staggies? Well seven came in and as many departed last winter. This time around the key for Cowie will be signing a winger.

However, he could also look to move players on with some defenders and midfielders yet to make an impact this season. Doing that would free up funds and spots in the squad - giving him room for even more additions.

St Johnstone

Simo Valakari has brought a fresh approach to McDiarmid Park but is limited with what he can do until he freshens up his squad.

While it is clear he has implemented a new attacking intent in games, they are not getting the rewards due to defensive frailties. Strengthening that back line will be key to survival for a team that built a reputation in their cup double-winning season of four years ago of being hard to beat.

Valakari - who will work alongside head of football operations, scouting and recruitment Gus MacPherson on deals - says he is on the same page as the club's American owners for January.

It is expected he will use his knowledge of the Scandinavian market and look to add players for the short term to keep them in the division. If he's successful, the summer will be when he looks to the future and deals that will help over a longer period.

St Mirren

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has extended his stay at the Scottish Premiership club until 2027

It could be a busy January for the Paisley club, with boss Stephen Robinson looking to strengthen all areas of his team.

A striker was top of the list and the Buddies wasted little time by announcing Owen Oseni had joined from Gateshead on the opening day of the window - signing a three-and-a-half-year deal.

He was one of three to depart due to off-field issues, with defenders Jaden Brown and Shaun Rooney also leaving. Therefore, it would be no surprise if Robinson looks to add to his defensive options too.

Robinson wants "a lot more competition" from January as his players look to step up and deliver another top-six finish this season.
