Aryna Sabalenka's long winning run is over after an extraordinary late collapse against Karolina Muchov saw the world No 2 knocked out in the quarter-finals of the China Open.

Sabalenka came into the match on a run of 15 consecutive wins and, although she lost the first set to Muchova in a tie-break 7-6 (7-5), she ultimately seemed to be cruising to the semi-finals after winning the second set 6-2 and then moving an immediate break up in the decisive third.

But as her game appeared to suddenly desert her approaching the winning line, the Belarusian lost the final four games in the final set as Muchova fought back from the break down to triumph 6-4 and move into the semi-finals.

It marks Sabalenka's first loss since exiting the Canadian Open at the same stage in August and is the third consecutive time in four overall meetings that the 26-year-old has lost to Muchova.

Muchova, the Czech player who is ranked 49th in the world and reached last month's US Open semi-finals, had already shown her fighting spirit against Sabalenka in the match by saving two set points in the opening set.

Speaking immediately after booking her place in Saturday's semi-final, Muchova said: "I just tried to fight for every ball and, in the end, it was worth it and I'm here standing now [after] winning.

"I'm going to watch the [other quarter-final] match and I hope the better [one] wins. I'm just going to try and recover as best as possible now there's no day off so I'll just do everything to be ready. To play another match is so amazing, this whole crowd and everything, it's unbelievable to play here."

Muchova will play Olympic gold medallist Qinwen Zheng in the semi-finals after the home favourite came from a set down to defeat 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva 5-7 6-0 6-4.

Zheng has now won 20 of her last 22 matches, a stretch that includes her title defence in Palermo, Olympic gold in Paris, and a second US Open quarter-final.

Despite the loss, Andreeva will make her top 20 debut after the tournament.

On the other side of the draw, former Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff booked her return to the China Open semi-finals where in-form Paolo Badosa awaits on Saturday morning - live on Sky Sports Tennis.

Shanghai Masters: Medvedev, Tsitsipas through but Ruud out, as Djokovic learns first opponent

Daniil Medvedev was among the leading seeds to book a place in the third round in Shanghai, although the former world No 1 was made to work for it by Brazil's Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Wild dumped Medvedev out in a shock result in the first round of last year's French Open and threatened a similar result here by breaking his Russian opponent's serve first in both of the sets. However, Medvedev - seeded fifth in Shanghai - ultimately made fewer errors and triumphed 7-5 7-5 to set up a match against the Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the next round.

"I'm happy I managed to stay composed in tough moments," said Medvedev, the 2019 tournament winner.

"He had a break in both sets. I managed to put on a lot of pressure and both times it worked at five-all."

Tenth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Kei Nishikori 7-6 (6), 6-4, while American 11th seed Tommy Paul easily came through 6-1, 6-3 against Fabio Fognini.

But eighth-seed Casper Ruud is out after the Norwegian lost in straight sets to Australian qualifier Aleksandar Vukic, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, another American, Alex Michelsen, booked a match against the returning Novak Djokovic in Saturday's round-three matches after defeating China's Yunchaokete Bu 6-3, 6-4.

Djokovic, currently ranked fourth in the world, plays for the first time since his shock third-round exit to Alexei Popyrin in the US Open last month.
